Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Why do Birdsbesafe Cat Collars prevent successful bird-hunting by cats?
The birds are alarmed by the highly visible swatch of bright color on the cat. Birds see bright colors as more bright than we do and they see bright colors more easily than we do, even in low light conditions because their eyes have more rods and cones than ours. So, the birds see the cat and fly away before the stalking cat can get close enough to pounce.
2. What colors do the collars come in?
The collars are reds, oranges, yellows with bright accents.
3. What makes the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar safe for my cat?
Birdsbesafe Cat Collar uses two parts:
1) A tube of brightly colored fabric that is open on both ends, so it falls apart when the interior collar buckle releases. It’s about 1 3/4 inches wide. It’s soft.
2) A breakaway buckle on the interior webbing collar comes open under about 5lbs of pressure, which is enough to release if the cat catches it on something. This type of buckle is the standard for pet owners who want to protect their cat from harm. It's easily adjusted for a snug fit.
4. Because it’s a breakaway collar, might it come off unexpectedly outdoors and get lost?
That’s possible. Remember, in order for your cat to be safe, the interior collar must come off if the cat snags it on a branch or other hazard. We can not endorse a non-releaseable collar type, and so we must live with the risk of the collar getting lost.
Birdsbesafe does use the best buckle on the market, which does not come off without significant pressure (5 lbs). Customer satisfaction has improved a lot with the use of the Kitty Klip buckle, but some cats may still lose the collar.
The best fit is a fairly snug, yet comfortable fit, leaving a fingertips width--but not enough for the cat to pry the collar off with a paw.
Some customers buy two collars per cat and figure that it’s worth it to replace a lost Birdsbesafe cat collar in order to protect the birds.
Some customers suggest getting the cat used to the Birdsbesafe collar while the cat is indoors for a few hours before the cat goes outdoors. Others suggest getting the cat used to the interior collar first, then adding the fabric tube in a few days.
Unfortunately, there is no absolute way to make a breakaway collar type that is 100% safe and yet 100% sure not to ever release with normal wear. Many cat owners find their cats keep the collars on just fine if not forever, at least for months at a time, however some cats do lose them more quickly--and there’s no easy way to say what will specifically happen with your cat.
We’re sorry about this problem, but we don’t want to mislead you. Our own cat kept their’s on for almost a year, then had a spell of losing collars, then kept them on again. Using an un-safe interior collar is just not an option for us as a seller.
5. What if I already own a “regular” cat collar that I like--can I just buy the fabric ruff?
Yes, you can now buy just the Birdsbesafe fabric ruff for $7.95 plus shipping--in any of current fabrics on the

6. Have Birdsbesafe Cat Collars been tested?
Our first “tester” was our own cat who wore the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar 16 months and caught 2-3 birds, instead of 2-3 per week. The collars have been sold to happy customers across the US and Great Britain who report that they do work very well. See Feedback page.

9. Will the collar get wet when it’s raining and be a problem for my cat?
Cats are smart and come in out of the rain. It should only rarely if ever get wet. It doesn’t really hug the neck tightly, so the cat won’t get cold. Our cat came to us when the collar was wet and we took it off to dry out.
10. What if my cat seems annoyed by the collar?
When putting collar on cat, place the buckle behind the cat’s head so the cat is less annoyed. Give the cat a few minutes in one room with you to adjust to the collar. If need be, leave the collar on briefly, then try again another day. It shouldn’t take long before the cat adjusts to it. Customers report good results with a little patience. Most cats will not be bothered by them at all.
One customer suggested that you try to get your cat used to the inner, webbing buckled-collar before trying to put on both the webbed collar and the fabric Birdsbesafe part. Sounds like a good idea to us. It would be easy to adjust the buckle that way, too, just remember that you may have to let it out to allow some room for the fabric portion when you add it.
Also--You can adjust the fabric tube so that the buckle is not exposed. Swing the tube around so the buckle is hidden and then the buckle can’t chafe on the cat’s neck at all.
11. Can the cat groom with it? Wear it all the time? Is it adjustable?
Yes, yes, and yes. The cat can groom sufficiently well and can wear the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar all the time. The collar easily adjust with a slide buckle. See photo on buying page.
