About Us
Birdsbesafe LLC has a mission of helping to protect birds from the hunting of outdoor cats. We’re a small, home-based Vermont business run by one woman. We sew the fabric collars ourselves, putting our lifelong love of sewing together with our dream of helping songbirds . Our cat keeps us inspired, too.
We started the business in the winter of 2009, one year after our cat, George, started wearing the first prototype of the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar. We were anxious to end his avid bird-hunting! Based on the eye anatomy of songbirds, which lets birds see bright colors very well, the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar attracts the birds attention rapidly while the cat stalks. The birds fly away immediately after instantly and to safety! The cat doesn’t have time to pounce!
After George wore the collar, he literally stopped bringing in or harming any more birds. After he had not killed any birds in a year of wearing our home-made design, the success was so great we wanted to share the device with others. So we went into business to bring the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar to other bird-hunting cats and to lower cat predation on songbirds world-wide.
After 15 months in business, we’ve learned that the Birdsbesafe Cat Collar works--for cats from Washington state, to Arizona, to the midwest, to Florida, New England, “old” England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales! Thank you, customers, for helping protect wild birds from cat predation.
Our new cat, Emmy, is an indoor cat because we live in the woods where wild animals prey on housecats.
