Birdsbesafe: Looking Ahead, Looking Back

Paco for Birdsbesafe Cat Collars, protecting birds
Here on a sunny December day in 2011, we have just completed another round of website updates at Birdsbesafe. Today's task was importing the blog entries from over two years--from Blogger to here. Automated efforts failed to please us, so we copied them the old-fashioned cut and paste way. We were dreading it, but it turned out to be fun looking back. Here are some thoughts.

Spring of 2008: Although it isn't documented in the blog, Birdsbesafe was born as an idea that fateful day that George brought in a deceased Ruffed Grouse. (They are big birds. He had some trouble getting in the 2nd of 2 cat doors with it.)

I set out to stop George's bird-hunting, and did stop it so effectively that George only caught 2-3 more birds in the next 18 or so months. George also became a kinder, gentler version of himself. He didn't really have a choice: the birds escaped by flying away when they saw him. But I do think he enjoyed not getting yelled at for harming birds!

After muttering, "Someone should sell these collars to help more birds" often enough--and going through a winter of joblessness--I went into business. I didn't know a profit margin from a sales channel, but I had a lot of help along the way.

Every time I send out your package with Birdsbesafe Cat Collars, I hope you like it, your cats like, and your neighborhood's birds benefit. How lucky am I that I get to do this? Very lucky, indeed.

And so, now we are happily in business, helping to protect birds worldwide. We make our ruffs right here in Vermont, we use organic fibers often, and we are passing along our solution to George's bird-hunting problem to help your cat, too, and help protect more birds. Hope that you'll join us taking advantage of this innovation.

Peace,
Nancy
