Birdsbesafe collar covers made front page news! Our local and regional newspaper, the Burlington Free Press, featured the story of our product's origin in a three-page cover story, complete with photos of three cats and me, the originator of the product. We recounted the story of the invention (which you can read on our About Us page), and we shared some information about how far the product has come, in our almost ten-year history.

Greetings from Vermont! My home's bird feeder went up for the winter season yesterday, after a spell of cold weather, sleet, rain and snow. This year, it seemed like we went from a day in the 80s, to snow, almost overnight. I thought it was time to put the bird feeder up, and I was right! The birds have been swarming it and I have refilled it twice already. They are so hungry that the Black-capped Chicadees are sharing with the Blue Jays, and the White-breasted Nuthatch will zoom in over the head of the departing Red-breasted Nuthatch.

Our small company has marketed its own invention, the patented Birdsbesafe® cat collar cover, since early in 2009. Yesterday, we celebrated a milestone for our scientifically tested and increasingly popular product. Birdsbesafe® collar covers were listed as an anti-predation device on the website of the American Bird Conservancy, a national bird conservation group.

When we designed the Birdsbesafe® collar cover, we wanted you to be able to use any cat collar that you liked. We still think this is a good idea: your cat may do well with a style of collar that wouldn't work as well for a different cat. Some cats are smaller, larger, stronger, more active, or (sigh) Houdini like in their ability to lose cat collars. Here are some pointers to help you pick a collar that will bring you success!

Siberian cat Numi sadly specialized in catching bats from the roof terrace. I tried a collar with a bell and was very happy that it worked well. Bats are masters in recieving sounds, obviously any sounds.
But then she changed prey and brought careless sparrows. That's why I bought the birds be safe collar. She does not love it, but she accepts it. But I missed the fact with the "long hair style" - at the moment, there is only one article available for long haired cats. So the careless sparrows will need good eyes. As especially the forest cat breeds... Maine Coon, Norwegian and Siberian... are known as "hunting machines", birds would be safer with more collars for the fluffy kitties!
K will pounce when she hears an outside door opening, and rush out. We know our beautiful Irish Birds ( Tits, Goldfinches, Robins, Wrens, Starlings etal) are Safe.
Birdbesafe collars do cut way down on bird deaths. Our 2 cats are allowed out in daylight only and both were rescued semi-ferals. They have worn Birdbesafe collars for years. You have to check the collars regularly so that they don''t get lost. Recently someone put a lost one in our mailbox.
Pepper is a recent addition to the family home. We think cats should be able to enjoy the outdoors but they need help being good neighbors sometimes. After 3 bird kills within a few weeks of each other, we knew we needed some support. We found Birds Be Safe in an internet search. Pepper now sports the colorful puzzle edition. It is comfortable for her and after almost 2 months of wearing it, no more birds have met their untimely demise. Easy to wash, easy to see with the reflective trim. Pepper is happy. We are happy. Birds are happy. Win-win-win. :)

I can’t definitively swear that it works. But I haven’t seen any new evidence of bird kills. After she killed three Lesser Goldens in one day, I had to do something or I was going to do something drastic.
I take the collar off at night and, after removing accumulated hair every morning from the fabric, put it back on her before she can go outside. After crooning, and praising her for wearing it for a couple days, she now submits to my putting it on her. After making sure the length of the break away collar is flat, not twisted inside the fabric, I approach from behind and below her eyes. The break away collar is hard to snap together, but it seems to work the way it was designed .

When I purchased this collar, my male cat was bringing a minimum of a bird a day into the house (mostly finches). He has worn the collar for 3 weeks now and has brought a hummingbird in the house (which I was able to rescue and put back outside.).
The collar is great! Here is our cat Poppi.
I have found zero dead hummingbirds since our cat started wearing this collar. He tolerates the collar well and I highly recommend it!
My nine-year old cat is an avid hunter. She was bringing in a kill, or live bird almost every day. I originally purchased the giant bell for her collar from this company and it worked for four days. This collar has worked now for three weeks. No birds, lizards, or rats (dead or alive) in my house for THREE WEEKS!!! Whereas I used to tentatively walk into my kitchen every morning, steeling myself for some level of carnage requiring a cleanup crew, I can now start my mornings on a joyful note. I highly recommend this product. If you have a bell on your cat's collar that you want to keep, I recommend putting a small stitch on each end of the openings to keep the bell from sliding into the fabric tube. The tube is rather wide and presents some issues, but they're not insurmountable - and applying a couple of small stitches helps a lot.
